MSNBC's Perry: Husbands Won't Be Able To Shoot Their Wives If We Took Their Legal Guns Away

Of course, this view would air on MSNBC–and it’s really not a shocker that Melissa Harris-Perry decided to basically say that it’s perfectly fine to confiscate legal guns because it could deter domestic violence. This deluge of insanity occurred during Perry’s Saturday show on the liberal news network, which had a panel to discuss the recent shooting of Quintonio LeGrier and Betty Jones in Chicago the day after Christmas.
Perry was alluding to the fact that police should be strong supporters of gun control due to the feeling that everyone is armed; police shot LeGrier when he reportedly charged at officers with an aluminum baseball bat. At least Jon Shane, a former police officer and professor of criminal justice on John Jay College, was there to say that as a nation, we’re a) not going to tolerate or accept gun confiscation and b) if we do anything related to gun control, it will only make it harder for law-abiding Americans to defend themselves

Melissa Harris-Perry: It seems to me that part of what happened in each of these cases is — and the question of fear — is it in part because we live in a country where really anybody at any moment might, in fact, have a gun. Again, I keep thinking about Quintonio’s father in Chicago calling for help for his son, calling the police, and his son ends up shot and killed by the police. Now I don’t know exactly what happened, we will be learning more. But I presume some part of it is that these police officers think that this kid might be armed because we think everybody might be armed. Shouldn’t officers be the number one folks behind gun control?
Jon Shane: Well, you do have a lot of Second Amendment officers. I happen to favor carrying a gun myself. I don’t think there’s much wrong with it. The reality is how are we going to keep the illegal guns away from people? It’s a very easy thing to do to keep guns …
Harris-Perry: A lot of people shoot their wives with perfectly legal guns.
Shane: And?
Harris-Perry: So they wouldn’t if they did not have them. So, so …
Shane: But we’re not going to take guns away from people. We’re just going to make it harder for law-abiding citizens to get them.
And the anti-gun left wonders why they haven’t had much success with selling their horrible gun policies to the American people. For starters, as it’s been written here ad nauseum, playing the domestic violence card in the hopes of galvanizing women voters to support this nonsense is a level of desperation akin to a Kamikaze dive. Women are the fastest growing segment of new gun owners, female participation in shooting sports has also increased, and they’re getting theirconcealed carry permits. Women exercising their Second Amendment rights are the next big thing for the gun industry. Heck, even the liberal Jezebel noted that these gun-owning moms “defy stereotypes.”
Oh, and let’s not forget the 2014 Everytown ad that played on the domestic abuse angle; it ended up being a media spot for why women (or anyone else for that matter) should own firearms.
Guns aren’t the impetus for domestic abuse. In some dystopia, where guns could be confiscated in what was the United States, domestic abuse would still tragically occur. At the same time, ending domestic abuse is a noble goal. You absolutely ruin any meaningful discussion about that when you throw anti-gun drivel into the mix.
