Progressives Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Tax Act, SWEET Act for short, would penalize people one-cent for every teaspoon of sugar used in their drink of choice.

Democrat Rep. Rosa DeLauro (CT-3)
In the Left’s quest to control every aspect of your life, and implement behavioral modification measures to ‘encourage’ you to eat, think, drink and overall live in the way they believe is best, Democrat Rep. Rosa DeLauro from Connecticut has proposed a bill that would cause you to face a special tax if you choose to drink a sugary beverage.

Her proposed Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Tax Act, SWEET Act for short, would penalize people one-cent for every teaspoon of sugar used in their drink of choice. Joining her in this behavioral punishment tax is fellow Rep. Jim Moran from Virginia and Delegate from D.C. Eleanor Holmes Norton. Norton recently made the claim that people, not even members of Congress, do not have the right to know what is happening in the their government because of the separation of powers.
Citing her belief that there is a relationship between sugar-sweetened drinks and health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and tooth decay, DeLauro believes her tax is needed because Americans of all ages have gotten too fat. She said, “People want to be healthy and they want their kids to be healthy. But we are in the midst of dual epidemics, with obesity and diabetes afflicting our nation and the related, astronomical health care costs.”
Her negative behavioral reinforcement plan would, according to DeLauro, “fund initiatives designed to reduce the human and economic costs of obesity, diabetes, dental programs and other health conditions” that are the result of sugary drink consumption.
In order to implement her behavior modification tax, DeLauro has asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to provide a recommendation on daily sugar consumption and force companies to state the percentage of sugar as a daily value in all food.
DeLauro believes that such a requirement by the FDA would help people make better choices when it comes to food.

Michelle Obama has also tried this behavioral modification tactic with school children, revamping the requirements for lunch menus in an effort to force children to eat healthier. This has resulted in a revolt in which many students have taken to social media to protest, stating that the food is not enough to even sustain them for the day.
Schools have also withdrawn from the federal lunch program due to massive loss of money from purchasing the food only to see it be thrown away by students. In addition, there has been a decline nationwide in participation in school lunch programs since Michelle Obama’s mandates were enforced.
