Inappropriate? Calling Gov. Palin “a world class idiot,” as Bashir did at the beginning of his little rant, was inappropriate. Stating that Mrs. Palin deserved to have someone urinate into her eyes and defecate into her mouth — as Bashir proceeded to advocate — any decent human being would call that just a tad over the line between “inappropriate” and “outrageous.”
And what was Sarah Palin’s crime for which Bashir believed she should be subjected to such revolting treatment? She dared to suggest that the debt being accumulated by our federal government will bring about a form of slavery for the next generation when those bills come due.
“Our free stuff today is being paid for by taking money from our children, and borrowing from China,” Palin said in a recent speech. “When that note comes due…it’s going to be like slavery…”
To that, the always-haughty and downright mean Martin Bashir responded: “Given her well-established reputation as a world class idiot, it’s hardly surprising that she should choose to mention slavery in a way that is abominable to anyone who knows anything about its barbaric history. So here’s an example:
“One of the most comprehensive first-person accounts of slavery comes from the personal diary of a man called Thomas Thistlewood, who kept copious notes for 39 years. Thistlewood was the son of a tenant farmer who arrived on the island of Jamaica in April 1750, and assumed the position of overseer at a major [sugar cane] plantation. What is most shocking about Thistlewood’s diary is not simply the fact that he assumes the right to own and possess other human beings, but is the sheer cruelty and brutality of his regime.
“In 1756,” Bashir continued, “Thistlewood records that ‘A slave named Darby catched eating canes; had him flogged and pickled, then made Hector, another slave, [Bashir then spelled out the common vulgar word for the term defecate] in his mouth.’ This became known as ‘Darby’s dose,’” Bashir said, “a punishment invented by Thistlewood that spoke only of the slave owners’ savagery and inhumanity.”
Bashir went on to recount another of Thistlewood’s diary entries, wherein a similar punishment was meted out by forcing one slave to urinate into the eyes and mouth of another. Then Bashir said this:
“When Mrs. Palin invoked slavery, she doesn’t just prove her rank ignorance. She confirms that if anyone truly qualified for a dose of discipline from Thomas Thistlewood, then she would be the outstanding candidate.”
Apparently, the firestorm that blew back on the network was too much even for the hateful lefties over at the NBC news division’s muckraking editorial department on cable, known as MSNBC. Bashir issued an on-air apology, then was suspended, and now has “submitted his resignation.”
Several years ago, uber-conservative radio talk show host Michael Savage wrote that “liberalism is a mental disorder.” While Savage himself has crossed the line on occasion with his on-air anger and name-calling, he makes a valid point in this case. However, I think liberalism or progressivism — call it what you will — is more than a mental disorder. It might more appropriately be described as a religious cult, with hatred as its sacrament, as expressed in just the sort of vitriol spewed by Martin Bashir.
Conservatives, for the most part, look at liberals as deceived utopians who operate strictly on emotion, with very little cohesive thought, and who simply do not understand human nature or basic economics. Liberals look at conservatives the way a religious extremist would look at his arch enemy: as evil.
Like the Islamic zealots they now refuse to acknowledge even exist, liberals are willing to destroy themselves and everyone around them before they will agree to compromise their failed policies and destructive beliefs.
