A West Hartford man was arrested after he was accused of videotaping women inside a bathroom at Wesleyan University Sunday night.

According to police, a female student observed a small digital camera in a bathroom on the third floor of the Olin Library just before 8 p.m. The unidentified woman told police that she heard "a faint beep" and noticed another person in one of the stalls.

After leaving the bathroom, the student and her friend returned to the area and noticed a man standing in the hallway, who was later identified as Michael Tormey McKenna, 30.

Campus security located McKenna, who is not a Wesleyan student, and said he was walking around after an argument with his roommate.

After witnesses identified him as the suspect, police searched him and his vehicle, where they located a small silver digital camera tucked in a seat pocket.

On the camera, police found 14 separate videos, which showed the inside of a bathroom stall and showed women using the toilet, police said.

Police seized McKenna's personal computer from his West Hartford home. The computer contained videos of females using the bathroom. Police said that some of the videos were shared on the Internet.
McKenna told police that "He was not proud of his fetish, but he cannot help it."

He was charged with third-degree criminal trespass, voyeurism and breach of peace. McKenna is scheduled to appear in Middlesex Superior Court on March 4 and was released on a $15,000 bond.
"It's a little gross. It's a little creepy," said Chloe Rineajart, who is a junior at Wesleyan University. "It's always a little scary when our more private spaces on campus are invaded by that type of activity."

Students told Eyewitness News that the library is open to the public.

"Actually, that is something that is a little disconcerting about the campus sometimes is that it's pretty easy access to the library," said Will Croughan, who is a freshman at Wesleyan. "The library, you don't have to show your key. You can just walk right in."

An official statement has not been released by Wesleyan University; however students told Eyewitness News that they learned about the incident through a school blog.

"It's not the first time it's happened this year," said Nayan Ghosh, who is sophomore at Wesleyan University.

Robert Rotaru, 19, of Higganum was arrested after police said he took photos of a female student in a dormitory shower with a cell phone camera.

Rotaru, who has no criminal history, was charged with disorderly conduct and voyeuristic recording of another person. He has accepted accelerated rehabilitation and pleaded not guilty of the charges.
Eyewitness News visited McKenna's home on Maplewood Avenue in West Hartford, but there was no answer.
